SAVE THE POOL - A COMMUNITY-BASED PETITION

Dear Mr. Donn and Mr. Hall

The residents of the Town of Gibson and surrounding areas benefit enormously from the services provided by the Gibsons Pool. Seniors, children, young adults and families need public spaces that help us to build and maintain physical and mental resilience in our daily lives and especially during this time of increasing uncertainty and anxiety.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) argues the pool can not, and should not, reopen because it is not considered cost-effective. We believe this is a false premise: pools are not built and maintained to make money, neither do libraries or parks. Public recreational spaces are created to foster healthy, strong and resilient families, neighbourhoods and communities. Additionally, we are confronted with the reality that our community is spread out with poor transit. Not opening the Gibsons Pool means that many people can not swim, period. The pool is a service designed to teach an important life skill that may save a life and provide recreation to all ages. What other facilities do this?

We want Gibsons pool, our pool, to be reopened and operated following a schedule equivalent to other pools in the region.

Please find the will and means to reopen our pool. You can make this happen. We are counting on you.

Respectfully,
